Short answer

Yes, an online or blended course can be accredited on any of the routes an in-person course can. The delivery mode is not what a body judges. What matters is that the learning outcomes, the assessment and the evidence meet the criteria, and that you can show assessment is secure and consistent whoever the learner is and wherever they are. Online delivery raises specific questions about identity, security and consistency, and a good submission answers them rather than hoping they are not asked.

Mode is not the barrier

Providers often assume that online or blended courses cannot be accredited, or that they are treated as second class. They are not. Accreditation bodies judge whether the outcomes are met and the assessment is sound, not whether the learning happened in a room. A well-built online course clears the same bar as a classroom one, on the same routes.

What online delivery does is raise particular questions, and the submission has to answer them. Who is the learner, and how do you know. How is assessment kept secure when it is not invigilated in person. How is consistency maintained across learners in different places. These are answerable, and answering them well is the difference between a smooth decision and a stalled one.

What a body actually checks

QuestionWhat a good submission shows
Are the outcomes met?Outcomes written at the level and mapped to where they are taught and assessed, online or not
Is assessment secure?Identity checks, controlled assessment conditions, and safeguards against misconduct
Is it consistent?Internal quality assurance that samples and standardises across all learners
Is the evidence there?Records that let an external reviewer trace any outcome for any learner

Blended, and the upgrade path

Blended courses, part online and part live, are common and accreditable, and often the strongest design because they use each mode where it works best. As with any course, we build to the accreditation standard from the start, so an online or blended course that begins as CPD-certified or internal training can be taken up to a regulated or MFHEA-accredited qualification later without a rebuild.

Where we fit

We design and build online, live and blended courses with our own technology and industry experts, and we build the assessment and evidence so the mode is never the reason a submission stalls. We prepare and manage the accreditation to a decision. We are a consultancy, not a regulator or an awarding organisation, and we do not award qualifications ourselves.

Securing online assessment, in practice

The question a body asks most about online delivery is how you know the right person did the work, under conditions you can stand behind. There is no single answer, and you do not always need in-person invigilation, but you do need a defensible method. That can mean identity checks at enrolment and at assessment, proctoring for high-stakes tests, controlled time windows, question banks that vary, and design that assesses applied understanding rather than something easily looked up.

The right mix depends on what is at stake. A short CPD course and a regulated qualification do not need the same safeguards, and part of the design work is choosing controls that are proportionate rather than theatrical. What matters is that the submission explains the method and shows it is consistent for every learner. We build those safeguards into the assessment from the start, so online delivery is a design decision you can evidence, not a weakness a reviewer has to probe.

Designing a blend so each part earns its place

A blended course is strongest when the split between online and live is deliberate, not accidental. Self-paced online works well for knowledge, foundational content and anything a learner benefits from revisiting; live sessions, in the room or virtual, earn their cost on practice, discussion, feedback and assessment that needs a human present.

Designing this way also helps at accreditation, because it is easy to show why each outcome is delivered and assessed in the mode that suits it. A blend that simply puts a classroom course online, or scatters live sessions without a reason, is harder to defend and usually weaker to learn from. We design the blend around the outcomes, so the structure has a rationale a body can follow and a learner can feel.

Common questions

Can an online course be accredited?

Yes, on the same routes as an in-person course. Bodies judge whether outcomes are met and assessment is sound, not the delivery mode.

Does online assessment need to be invigilated?

It needs to be secure and consistent, which can be achieved in several ways, from proctoring to controlled conditions and identity checks. The submission has to show how, not necessarily invigilate in person.

Is a blended course harder to accredit?

No. Blended designs are common and often stronger, because they use each mode where it works best. The criteria are the same.

Will an online qualification be taken as seriously?

A recognised qualification carries its level regardless of mode. What matters to a buyer is the recognition and the level, which are the same online as in the room.

Can an online CPD course become a full qualification later?

Often, yes. Built to the accreditation standard from the start, it can be taken up to a regulated or MFHEA-accredited qualification without a rebuild.
