Compliance at work

This is the course we show people when they ask what we actually build. It's written for every member of staff at Brightwater Group, a company we made up with about 600 people. Six short modules, roughly 75 minutes, and somewhere along the way you'll meet all 22 of our forms of engagement.

Nothing here is a mock-up. Each activity works, you pick up XP as you go, there's a badge for every module and a certificate at the end.

Compliance in one minute

What compliance looks like on an ordinary day

People hear 'compliance' and picture a department two floors up. In real life it's a handful of small calls you make every week: do I take this gift, do I open this email, do I say something about the invoice that doesn't add up.

Usually you know straight away what to do. This course is for the times you don't.

  • Not sure of the rule? Somebody near you will be. Ask.
  • Gut says something's off? Wait a minute before you act.
  • Write it down. A note in the register covers you as much as it covers the company.
  • Nobody at Brightwater gets in trouble for an honest concern. Ever.

Module 1: Speaking up, page 5

Why speaking up matters

Problems usually get spotted early, by whoever is closest to the work

Maybe it's a colleague who notices invoices being split in two so each half stays under the approval limit, or a manager who keeps 'forgetting' to record hospitality. Whether anything happens next comes down to one thing: does that person feel safe enough to say so?

In the UK, the Public Interest Disclosure Act 1998 protects workers who report wrongdoing in the public interest. Across the EU, the Whistleblowing Directive protects people who report breaches of EU law.

  • Who to tell: your manager, the compliance officer or the confidential speak-up line
  • What to say: what you saw, when, and who else might know. You don't need proof
  • What happens next: the concern is logged, looked into, and you hear the outcome where that's possible

Module 3: Protecting data, page 11

Personal data, the basics

Personal data is anything that points to a person

Names, email addresses, payroll numbers, photos, car number plates. Some of it is more sensitive again: someone's health, their religion, whether they're in a union, their sexual orientation or ethnic origin. That's 'special category' data, and the rules on it are tighter.

Most slips are boring ones. Wrong attachment. Screen left on. A printout forgotten on the copier. The upside is that boring habits fix them.

  • Only ask for what you actually need
  • Only pass it to people who need it
  • Lock things: screens, drawers, the print queue
  • Report a breach the same day. For serious ones there's usually a 72-hour deadline to tell the regulator
