What is CPD certification, and how do you get a course certified?

CPD certification confirms that a course meets the standard of a Continuing Professional Development body, so a professional can log the hours toward their annual requirement. It is the fastest credible recognition available to most providers, usually measured in weeks, and it is often exactly what a buyer of a short course asks for.

Short answer

CPD certification confirms that a course meets the standard of a Continuing Professional Development body, so a professional can log the hours toward their annual requirement. It is the fastest credible recognition available to most providers, usually measured in weeks, and it is often exactly what a buyer of a short course asks for. It does not make a course a regulated qualification and does not place it on a national framework, but for professional learning it is frequently the right answer, at a fraction of the cost and time of a regulated qualification.

What CPD certification actually is

Continuing Professional Development is the learning professionals do to keep their skills current, often against an annual requirement set by a professional body or employer. CPD certification is recognition by a CPD certification body that a specific course meets its standard, so the hours a learner spends on it can be logged and counted. It is a statement about the quality and countability of a course, not a qualification and not a licence.

For a large share of the training market that is precisely what the buyer needs. A professional who has to evidence a number of CPD hours a year wants credible, loggable learning, not a formal qualification. For that buyer, CPD certification does the job directly, and reaching for a regulated qualification instead would be slower, dearer and unnecessary.

Why it is usually the fastest route

CPD certification is measured in weeks, where a regulated qualification is measured in months and MFHEA provider licensing in Malta is stated at roughly 6 to 12 months. The reason is that CPD certification checks that a well-built course meets a professional-development standard, rather than placing it on a national framework at a regulated level. If the course and its supporting material are ready, the route is short.

RouteWhat it givesTypical timeline
CPD certificationCertified, loggable professional-development hoursWeeks
UK regulated qualificationA formal, level-rated qualification on a UK frameworkMonths, via an awarding organisation
MFHEA accreditation (Malta)An EU-recognised, EQF-referenced levelApproximately 6 to 12 months (stated)

When CPD is the right route, and when it is not

CPD certification is the right route when your buyer needs credible, countable professional learning and does not need a formal level. It is the wrong route when the buyer genuinely needs a qualification carrying a recognised level, for the UK or for the EU, because CPD does not provide that. Part of doing this honestly is saying which of these you are in, rather than selling the heavier option by default or the lighter one where it will not hold.

  • Right for short courses and professional development that needs to be credible and loggable.
  • Not a substitute for a regulated qualification or an MQF or EQF level.
  • Often the fastest and cheapest credible recognition to put in place.
  • Built so the course can be taken up to a fuller accreditation later without a rebuild.

Build it so you can upgrade later

One reason CPD certification is a sensible place to start is that a course built properly for CPD can usually be taken up to a regulated or MFHEA-accredited qualification later without starting again, if the market later demands a formal level. We build to a standard that keeps that upgrade open, so choosing CPD first is a low-cost entry, not a dead end.

Where we fit

We do not certify courses ourselves. Through our CPD Certification service we help you choose a CPD body that suits your course and your buyers, check the course against that body's criteria, prepare the submission and manage it to a decision. Quality assurance comes with it, before the submission and every year after. If the course still needs building, our course development for CPD Certification does that first. We point you to CPD rather than something heavier when CPD is what you actually need. We are not a regulator, an awarding organisation or a CPD certification body, and CPD certification is not a qualification.

What a CPD certificate actually shows

A CPD certificate is a specific claim, and it is worth being clear about what it does and does not say. It records that a named learner completed a course that a CPD certification body has judged to meet its standard, and it states the CPD hours or points the course carries. That is what a professional logs toward an annual requirement set by their body or employer.

What it does not say is that the learner holds a regulated qualification or a level on a national framework, because CPD certification is not that. Presenting it as more than it is helps nobody, least of all the buyer who later finds the recognition does not stretch as far as they assumed. Used honestly, though, it is a strong, fast signal: credible, countable professional learning, recognised by a body a buyer trusts. We build the course to the CPD standard and make the claim accurate, so the certificate means exactly what it says.

What a CPD body checks

A CPD body checks that the course is well structured, current, and worth the CPD hours or points it claims. In practice that means clear learning objectives, content that is accurate and up to date, a sensible structure, and a CPD value that matches the actual learning time. The review confirms the course is credible professional development.

It is a lighter touch than a regulated qualification assessment, and it should be, because it recognises something different. A serious CPD body will still push back on thin content or an inflated hours claim, so a well built course earns the mark on merit.

How to present CPD honestly to buyers

Present CPD certification with the precise claim: the course is CPD certified and carries a stated number of CPD hours. Name the CPD value and, where relevant, the certification service. Do not use the word accredited in a way that implies a regulated qualification, because a professional buyer will read it literally and check it.

Honest, specific wording is stronger, not weaker: twelve CPD hours, CPD certified is a clear promise a buyer can trust. Vague claims invite the one question that unravels them.

CPD versus regulated, a quick comparison

CPD certification and a regulated qualification are different products with different promises, and the table below sets out the contrast. Use it to match the recognition to what your buyers actually need, rather than defaulting to whichever sounds most impressive.

CPD CertificationRegulated qualification
Granted byA CPD certification serviceA regulator or recognised awarding organisation
Framework levelNone by itselfA level on the RQF, SCQF or MQF

Neither is better in the abstract: CPD certification is right for a lot of professional training, and a regulated qualification where a level is genuinely needed. Choosing well and describing it accurately is the whole game.

Common questions

Is CPD certification the same as a regulated qualification?

No. CPD certification confirms that professional learning meets a CPD standard so the hours can be logged. A regulated qualification is a formal award placed on a national framework and overseen by a regulator. CPD is quicker and cheaper, and serves a different need.

How long does CPD certification take?

Usually weeks rather than months, depending on how ready the course and its supporting evidence are when we start. It is the fastest of the common recognition routes.

Will CPD certification give my course a level?

No. CPD certification does not place a course on a national framework or give it a regulated or EQF level. If you need a formal level, the UK regulated route or MFHEA accreditation in Malta is the right one.

Can a CPD course be upgraded to a qualification later?

Often, yes. A course built properly for CPD can usually be taken up to a regulated or MFHEA-accredited qualification later without a rebuild. We build to keep that upgrade open.

Can you CPD certify the course yourselves?

No. The certificate comes from an independent CPD body. We prepare the course, manage the application to the body you choose and run the quality assurance either side of it. We are not a regulator, an awarding organisation or a CPD certification body.
