Choosing an instructional design model for a training provider

ADDIE, the full build

ADDIE is the classic five-stage process for building a course from scratch: analyse, design, develop, implement, evaluate. It suits a substantial new course where you want a complete, ordered process that nothing falls out of. Each stage feeds the next, and the evaluate stage loops back so the course improves after it runs.

The strength of ADDIE is completeness; the weakness is that a strict, linear reading can be slow, because you finish one stage before starting the next. In practice most teams run it with some overlap, especially designing the assessment while still developing content.

Backward design, outcomes first

Backward design starts from the outcomes and the evidence, then works back to the content, which makes it the best fit for an accredited course. You decide what a learner must be able to do, then decide what evidence would prove it, then build only the content that gets them there. Nothing in the course exists without a reason.

This matters for accreditation because a regulator reads the thread from outcome to assessment to evidence, and backward design builds that thread on purpose. It also keeps courses lean. If you are aiming at an MQF or RQF level, this is usually where to start.

Rapid and agile models, iterate quickly

Rapid and agile models build a working version fast, then improve it through cycles of feedback, and they suit content that changes or a first version you want in front of learners quickly. Instead of perfecting the whole course before launch, you ship a usable core and refine it with real use. Speed and adaptability are the point.

The risk is drift: fast iteration without fixed outcomes can wander, and a course that keeps changing is hard to accredit and hard to quality assure. So use a rapid approach inside fixed outcomes: iterate on how you teach and assess, not on what the course is for.

Use this as a starting point, then adapt. The model is a means to a well-built course, not the goal, so pick the one that fits the job in front of you and borrow from the others where it helps.
